2 Years After Horrible Heckling Incident, Naomi Osaka Opens Up About Adverse Effects While Praising Tennis\u2019 Mental Health Support<\/h1>\n

\u201cGrowing up, I was told to tough it out. And I was in my head thinking athletes are supposed to stick it out and you\u2019re\u00a0<\/em>actually weak if you show your emotions\u2026so it was a very big<\/em>\u00a0internal battle,<\/em>\u201d said Naomi Osaka in a previous interview. However, the 26-year-old Japanese superstar couldn\u2019t hold her emotions for too long after a horrible incident at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters. Two years later, after that shameful incident, Naomi Osaka reflects on how things have changed a bit nowadays.<\/p>\n

During her R64 match against Russia\u2019s Veronika Kudermetova at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters, a heckler shouted at Naomi Osaka, which led her to burst into tears. What did the heckler say to her that time? As per several reports, during her match against Kudermetova, a woman yelled, \u201cNaomi, you s-ck!<\/em>\u201d Reflecting on this shameful moment inside the stadium, Naomi Osaka\u00a0revealed that, \u201cIt kind of took me out of my element.<\/em>\u201d Shortly after that incident, she was seen asking the umpire for permission to use the microphone to address the crowd.<\/p>\n

However, the umpire denied her request, and she had to wait until the end of her match to make her comments. After getting the mic in her hand, she said, \u201cI just want to say, \u2018Thank you,\u2019<\/em>\u201d in a quivering voice and wiping the tears that rolled down her cheeks. \u201cI feel like I\u2019ve cried enough on camera. I just wanted to say, to be honest, I\u2019ve been\u00a0<\/em>heckled before like it didn\u2019t really<\/em>\u00a0bother me,<\/em>\u201d she said at that time. That moment\u00a0reminded\u00a0her of Serena and Venus Williams\u2019 similar experiences in the past.<\/p>\n

Perhaps that\u2019s what made her more emotional. She recently gave an interview with PEOPLE, where she reflected a bit on that horrifying experience and added that she\u2019s pleased to see the tennis community taking mental health issues \u201creally seriously<\/em>\u201d in recent years. She\u2019s grateful that \u201calmost all<\/em>\u201d the tournaments now offer access to \u201cfacilities with quiet rooms<\/em>\u201d and \u201csomeone you can talk to on-site 24\/7<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n
