TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (AP) As Donald Trump railed against immigrants in the Rust Belt on Saturday afternoon, his followers in the Deep South used his previous remarks as a rallying cry for a college football game as they prepared for the former president’s visit later that evening.

“You gotta get these people back where they came from,” Trump said in Wisconsin, as the Republican presidential nominee focused on Springfield, Ohio, which has been roiled by false claims about Haitian immigrants stealing and “eating the dogs… eating the cats” from neighbors’ homes.

“You have no choice,” Trump added. “You’ll lose your culture. “You are going to lose your country.” Many University of Alabama fans anticipate Trump’s arrival to their campus for the game between the No. 4 Crimson Tide and the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs featured stickers and buttons that said, “They’re eating the Dawgs!”.

They chanted “Trump! Trump! Trump!” at random throughout the day, a foreshadowing of the raucous reception he received early in the second quarter as he sat in a 40-yard-line suite hosted by a wealthy member of his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.

Trump’s brand of populist nationalism is heavily based on his dismal portrayal of America as a dying nation victimized by elites and overrun by Black and brown immigrants.

However, his fans, particularly white cultural conservatives, perceive in his discourse a hopeful patriotism epitomized by the slogan on his movement’s omnipresent red hats: “Make America Great Again.”

Shane Walsh, a 52-year-old businessman from Austin, Texas, made this assessment. Walsh and his family decked out their tent on the university quadrangle with a Trump 2024 flag and a professionally produced placard depicting the recently popular theme about the Alabama football team “eating the Dawgs.

” For Walsh, the sign was not about immigration or the specifics of Trump’s showmanship, exaggerations, and lies.

“I don’t necessarily like him as a person,” Walsh admitted. “But I believe Washington is dysfunctional, and it is the responsibility of both parties—and Trump is the type of guy who will stand up.

He is many things, but weak is not one of them. He’s an optimistic man; he just makes you feel that if he’s in control, everything will be fine.” He stated the inspiration for the placard came from a meme he gave to his wife.

“I thought it was funny,” he explained. Katie Yates, 47, of Hoover, Alabama, had the same experience with her life-size cutout of the former president. She was stopped several times on her route to her family’s regular tent.

Trump’s likeness was scheduled to join Elvis, “There’s always an Alabama fan at our tailgate,” Yates explained. “I’m such a Trump fan,” she remarked, adding that she couldn’t understand why not everyone in America was.

Yates made no disparaging remarks about Trump’s opponent, Democratic nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris, instead lamenting her inability to attend the game and see Trump recognized by the stadium’s public address system and shown pumping his fist on large video screens in all four corners of Bryant-Denny Stadium.
