Frankie Beverly\u2014the legendary Philadelphia funk and soul singer who fronted the band Maze\u2014has died. \u201cHe lived his life with pure soul as one would say, and for us, no one did it better. He lived for his music, family and friends,\u201d his family posted in a\u00a0social media statement<\/a>\u00a0announcing his death today. Beverly was 77.<\/p>\n

Born Howard Stanley Beverly in Philadelphia in 1946, Beverly started his music career singing gospel in his local church. He went on to found a short-lived a cappella group called The Blenders in his teens, before founding The Butlers in his hometown in 1963. The group eventually moved to San Francisco in the early 1970s, where they were renamed Raw Soul. It was in this iteration that the band caught the attention of soul legend Marvin Gaye, who invited them to open for him on a tour. Around this time, Gaye also convinced the group to change their name to Maze.<\/p>\n

Maze was signed to Capitol Records in 1976, and released their first album,\u00a0Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly<\/i>, the following year. The record yielded several hits such as \u201cHappy Feelin\u2019s,\u201d \u201cWhile I\u2019m Alone,\u201d and \u201cLady of Magic,\u201d and was certified Gold later that year. The band would go on to release eight more Gold albums through 1996, including\u00a0Golden Time Of Day<\/i>,\u00a0Can\u2019t Stop The Love<\/i>,\u00a0Silky Soul<\/i>,\u00a0Live In New Orleans<\/i>, and more. Their hit singles over the years included songs like \u201cGolden Time of Day,\u201d \u201cSouthern Girl,\u201d \u201cThe Look in Your Eyes,\u201d \u201cJoy and Pain,\u201d \u201cWe Are One,\u201d and \u201cBefore I Let Go,\u201d which recently got a renewed boost in popularity after Beyonc\u00e9 covered it as a bonus track on\u00a0Homecoming: The Live Album<\/i>\u00a0in 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is one of the high points of my life,\u201d Beverly said of hearing his \u201cgreat friend\u201d cover the song in a 2019 interview with\u00a0Billboard<\/i><\/a>. \u201cI just thought it was a great little song, but I never thought it\u2019d be all this. It really changed everything for me. It was a huge song at the time, and it\u2019s one of those things this band will be able to carry on forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
