If you\u2019re looking for a holiday like no other \u2013 go no further than the return of\u00a0Dark Mofo<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0to Tasmania between Dec 8-22, 2024<\/em>\u00a0as the festivities come back in full swing for this year\u2019s edition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s festival is a celebration of coming together again, to listen to some music, see some art and eat at the Winter Feast,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Creative Director\u00a0Leigh<\/strong>\u00a0Carmichael<\/strong>\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cAs the cultural world re-emerges from the darkness of cancellations and lockdowns, we are all experiencing a rebirth, of sorts. The forced isolation gave rise to a re-evaluation of what matters, to new ideas, new dreams. We\u2019ve assembled over 100 artists from 30 countries, from Australia to Belgium to Kyrgyzstan, and look forward to bringing them to Hobart this winter. We\u2019re just grateful to be able to present a full festival program again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Last year, we headed along to take in the\u00a0art, music and culture\u00a0that Mofo had to offer in the midst of the pandemic and had a brilliant time in the process (especially when you take into consideration the sheer number of activities on offer). And this time, it\u2019s all hands on deck!<\/p>\n

For Week One \u2013\u00a0June 8-15<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Punters can check out the likes of The Kid Laroi<\/strong>, Japanese noise stoner rock band Boris, and US artist\u00a0Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe<\/strong>\u00a0(formerly of the band\u00a0OM<\/strong>) will be performing his original score for Nia DaCosta\u2019s adaptation of the horror classic\u00a0Candyman.<\/em><\/p>\n

Art-wise,\u00a0Mona will offer three new major exhibitions by artists\u00a0Jeremy Shaw<\/strong>,\u00a0Fiona Hall<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0AJ King<\/strong>, and\u00a0Robert Andrew<\/strong>. The exhibition\u2019s opening weekend includes a big winter celebration at the museum\u2014 \u2018Mona Up Late\u2019\u2014featuring music, fire and fun.<\/p>\n

Dark Mofo is honoured to present works by influential video and new media artist\u00a0Bill Viola<\/strong>, as well as\u00a0sculpturist and multi-channel video artist\u00a0Doug Aitken\u00a0<\/strong>(USA).\u00a0J\u00f3nsi<\/strong>\u00a0(Sigur R\u00f3s) will present a multi-channel immersive experience inspired by the recent eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There\u2019s also the interactive installation\u00a0Rainbow Dream: Moon Rainbow\u00a0<\/em>by Japanese\/Australian artist\u00a0Hiromi Tango,\u00a0<\/strong>Holy Mother of God: Emergency Doll House\u00a0<\/em>by Hobart-based\u00a0Sabio\u00a0<\/strong>occupying a three-storey building with a carnivalesque journey into the subconscious via projection mapping, sculpture, and animation and\u00a0Sir Sidney Nolan<\/strong>\u00a0will feature in the exhibition\u00a0For the Term of His Natural Life\u00a0<\/em>at Detached Hobart,\u00a0<\/em>with works on crayon and paper\u00a0addressing exile and oppression.<\/p>\n

There will also be exciting exhibitions opening at partner venues including\u00a0Contemporary Art Tasmania<\/strong>,\u00a0Good Grief Studios<\/strong>,\u00a0Black Temple Gallery<\/strong>,\u00a0Plimsoll Gallery<\/strong>\u00a0and at a variety of locations around the city during week one.<\/p>\n

Week Two \u2013\u00a0June 16-22<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

For the heavy metal fans, Dark Mofo\u2019s unholy nights of deafening metal include\u00a0Sanctae Noctis<\/strong>\u00a0with an impressive lineup featuring\u00a0Deafheaven<\/strong>,\u00a0Katatonia<\/strong>,\u00a0Lingua<\/strong>\u00a0Ignota<\/strong>,\u00a0Conjurer<\/strong>,\u00a0King Yosef, Black Sheep<\/strong>\u00a0Wall<\/strong>,\u00a0Diploid<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0YLVA<\/strong>, as well as festival favourite\u00a0Hymns to the Dead<\/strong>\u00a0(Triumph of Death, Chthe\u2019ilist, Krypts, Darkestrah<\/strong>) making it\u2019s terrifying return.<\/p>\n

Plus an exclusive Australian performance by Swiss metal band\u00a0Triptykon<\/strong>,\u00a0driven by\u00a0Tom Gabriel Fischer<\/strong>\u00a0(Hellhammer<\/strong>,\u00a0Celtic<\/strong>\u00a0Frost<\/strong>). German electronic artist\u00a0Nils Frahm\u00a0<\/strong>will grace Mofo with his masterful array of pianos, synths, and drum machines in\u00a0Music For Hobart<\/strong>, as will the sublimely radiating tenderness of American artist\u00a0Perfume Genius<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
