In the 1970s, for every swaggering rock band churning out loud and dirty hits, there was a soft rock band keeping the decade mellow. One of the greatest of them all was\u00a0Bread<\/strong>. They exemplified \u201970s adult contemporary, hitting the No. 1 spot on the Easy Listening chart over and over.<\/p>\n

Led by vocalists Jimmy Griffin and David Gates, Bread recorded delicate, folky love songs that resonated with listeners. On the day Griffin would have turned 70, we\u2019re revisiting the four Bread hits that topped the mellowest music chart there is.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0wasn\u2019t Bread\u2019s first hit single \u2013 that was \u201cMake It With You\u201d \u2013 but when it was released in 1971, \u201cIf\u201d became their first Easy Listening No. 1 and quickly established itself as a wedding-reception favorite. It\u2019s been covered by a wide range of admirers, too \u2013\u00a0Frank Sinatra, Herbie Mann,\u00a0Andy Williams, and many more.<\/p>\n
