Jethro Tull\u2019s relationship with the Christmas season goes all the way back to the legendary band\u2019s early days.<\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s to be renewed for modern-day admirers and longtime fans alike, with the release of an expanded and remixed edition of 2003\u2019s The Jethro Tull Christmas Album via InsideOutMusic on the 6th\u00a0December 2024.<\/p>\n

Under the title \u0091The Jethro Tull Christmas Album \u0096 Fresh Snow At Christmas\u0092, the bands 21st\u00a0studio album has been remixed from the original masters by Bruce Soord (The Pineapple Thief), as well as being given the surround sound treatment in both Dolby Atmos & 5.1. The limited deluxe 4CD + Blu-ray book-set collection features all-new artwork, as well as live material, and includes the following across its 5 discs.<\/p>\n

The Jethro Tull Christmas Album was much praised on first release, with Rolling Stone noting admiringly: \u201cThe originals simmer with eccentric, eclectic, folky energy, rocking ditties threaded through with Celtic stylings, jazzy undercurrents, Ian Anderson\u2019s distinctive flute and wry humour.\u201d Allmusic called it \u201cperhaps the most satisfying Tull releases in 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

It included new interpretations of no fewer than seven Tull songs, including their first to be inspired by the holiday, 1968\u2019s much-loved \u2018A Christmas Song.\u2019 That Anderson composition, which opened with lyrics interpolated from \u2018Once in Royal David\u2019s City,\u2019 was the B-side of the band\u2019s first UK chart single, \u2018Love Story.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the tracks are not necessarily Christmas songs; they\u2019re more seasonal so that gives a broader window,\u201d says Ian. \u201cAnd then there are a couple of them that I quite often play in the middle of summer and say, \u2018It\u2019ll soon be Christmas \u2013 it\u2019s in the diary. So let\u2019s kick it off now.\u2019 And that\u2019s part of what I\u2019ve done over the years since October of 1968 when I went into record \u2018A Christmas Song. \u2018So, yes \u2013 it goes back a long way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018A Christmas Song\u2019 was joined on the album by reworkings of such pieces as Tull\u2019s 1976 festive hit \u2018Ring Out Solstice Bells\u2019; \u2018Weathercock,\u2019 first heard on 1978\u2019s Heavy Horses; and \u2018Another Christmas Song,\u2019 from 1989\u2019s Rock Island. Also among the re-recordings was J.S. Bach\u2019s \u2018Bourr\u00e9e\u201d, another longtime live favourite, inimitably imagined by Ian.<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the joy of redoing those things,\u201d he says, \u201cis that you can\u2026not necessarily recreate, but you can keep all the essential elements of the song and maybe declutter it a little bit and give it a fresh look, but essentially still staying faithful to the original arrangements.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Jethro Tull Christmas Album was their last studio set to feature longtime guitarist Martin Barre, who composed its pretty closing instrumental \u2018A Winter Snowscape.\u2019 Also featured on the album were keyboard and accordion player Andrew Giddings, bassist Jonathan Noyce and drummers Doane Perry and James Duncan. Anderson compositions making their debut included the opening \u2018Birthday Card At Christmas\u2019 and \u2018First Snow On Brooklyn,\u2019 while traditional pieces such as \u2018God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen\u2019 and \u2018We Five Kings\u2019 were interpreted alongside Faur\u00e9\u2019s \u2018Pavane.\u2019<\/p>\n
