It\u2019s been many years since the\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>\u00a0cast wrapped the beloved family drama, so where are they today? You might already know\u00a0Jason Bateman, who played James Cooper Ingalls, went to star in popular series like\u00a0Arrested Development<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Ozark<\/em>. And you might follow\u00a0Kyle Richards, who played Alicia Sanderson Edwards, on\u00a0<\/em>The\u00a0Real Housewives of Beverly Hills<\/em>. But what about the rest of the Ingalls family? And the Olesons?<\/p>\n

In honor of the 50th anniversary of\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>, let\u2019s take a look at what the cast has been up to since the show ended.<\/p>\n

Melissa Gilbert (Laura Ingalls)<\/h2>\n

From 9 to 18 years old, Gilbert starred as Laura Ingalls on\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>\u00a0and in the show\u2019s many spin-offs. Gilbert was a very successful child actor \u2014 with a notable performance as Helen Keller in the 1979 TV movie\u00a0The Miracle Worker<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 and she\u2019s kept busy since\u00a0Little House<\/em>\u00a0ended, even joining the cast of\u00a0Dancing with the Stars\u00a0<\/em>in 2012.<\/p>\n

Gilbert, 60, is a mom of two adult children, sons Dakota and Michael, a\u00a0grandmother, and is married to actor Timothy Busfield. In 2009, she released a memoir titled\u00a0Prairie Tale<\/em>\u00a0about her experience as a young actress playing Laura Ingalls and other personal stories.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Gilbert will guest star in Season 12 of the Western drama series,\u00a0When Calls the Heart<\/em>,\u00a0Deadline<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>reported. She also co-founded an expansive lifestyle brand,\u00a0Modern Prairie.\u00a0In an interview with\u00a0U<\/em>S<\/em>A Today<\/em>\u00a0in 2024, Gilbert said she believes\u00a0Little House<\/em>\u00a0has such a big and lasting fanbase because the show “crosses all borders.”<\/p>\n

“Everybody can take ownership of it,” she said. “I think it resonates because it speaks to everyone on their level. And the stories we told, many of them were very, very, very rough. We didn’t tell exploitively, we told honestly, and from a place of compassion and understanding, and I think that is impactful for people. We weren’t jamming our perspectives down people’s throats.”<\/p>\n

Michael Landon (Charles \u201cPa\u201d Ingalls)<\/h2>\n

Landon had starred in several movies and TV shows before he portrayed Charles \u201cPa\u201d Ingalls on\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>. From 1974 to 1983, Landon played the patriarch of the Ingalls family and was also an executive producer, writer, and director on the long-running historical drama.<\/p>\n

After\u00a0Little House<\/em>\u00a0ended, Landon created, directed, and starred in the NBC series\u00a0Highway to Heaven<\/em>, which also featured many of his former co-stars.<\/p>\n

Sadly, Landon passed away in 1991 at the age of 54, months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Shortly before his death, Landon appeared on\u00a0The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson<\/em>\u00a0and addressed the insensitive tabloid coverage he\u2019d been facing since his diagnosis.\u00a0\u201cFor any of those families out there who have a relative who has cancer, they know how tough the fight is and how important the mental attitude is,\u201d he said. \u201cYou pull together and you keep a very, very up attitude \u2026 because mentally is more than 50% of your medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Karen Grassle (Caroline \u201cMa\u201d Ingalls)<\/h2>\n

Grassle played Caroline \u201cMa\u201d Ingalls for eight seasons on\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>.\u00a0While working on the NBC series, Grassle co-wrote and starred in the 1978 TV movie about domestic abuse,\u00a0Battered<\/em>. When\u00a0Little House<\/em>\u00a0ended, Grassle went on to act in many plays around the country. She also had roles in a variety of movies, including the biographical Western\u00a0Wyatt Earp<\/em>\u00a0starring Kevin Costner.<\/p>\n

In 2021, Grassle released her memoir \u2014\u00a0Bright Lights, Prairie Dust: Reflections on Life, Loss, and Love from Little House’s Ma<\/em>. That same year, she also starred in\u00a0Not to Forget<\/em>, a film she described on\u00a0her website\u00a0as a \u201clighthearted story that revolves around the issue of dementia and family.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2024, Grassle, now 82,\u00a0celebrated the 50th anniversary\u00a0of\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>\u00a0with the cast\u00a0and fans of the show. In a\u00a0video\u00a0from the event, Grassle was asked if she had a favorite Ingalls child, and very gracefully and simply said, \u201cNo.\u201dMelissa Sue Anderson as Mary Ingalls<\/p>\n

Melissa Sue Anderson (Mary Ingalls)<\/h2>\n

When Anderson was 11 years old, she landed the role of Laura Ingalls\u2019 older sister Mary on\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>. In 1978, Anderson earned\u00a0an\u00a0Emmy nomination\u00a0for her portrayal of Mary Ingalls, who loses her eyesight in Season 4.<\/p>\n

In the years after\u00a0Little House<\/em>\u00a0ended, Anderson acted in many TV movies, episodes, and specials, including\u00a0The Equalizer<\/em>,\u00a0the\u00a0Veronica Mars<\/em>\u00a0film, and\u00a0Murder She Wrote<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Anderson, now 62, is a mom of two adult children, daughter Piper and son Griffin, and has been married to her husband Michael Sloan since 1990. While Anderson was born in California, her family now\u00a0calls Canada home.<\/p>\n

Nowadays,\u00a0Anderson has mostly stepped away from acting and released an autobiography in 2011 titled\u00a0Way I See It: A Look Back At My Life On Little House<\/em>.\u00a0In 2014, she reunited with her castmates and spoke to\u00a0TODAY<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>for the show\u2019s 40th anniversary. \u201cThe set to me was like a warm blanket,\u201d Anderson said about working the show as a young girl.<\/p>\n

Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush (Carrie Ingalls)<\/h2>\n

Identical twin sisters Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush, now 54, shared the role of Carrie Ingalls, Laura\u2019s younger sister, on\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>.\u00a0In an interview with\u00a0Cozi TV<\/em>, the sisters shared some behind-the-scenes facts about filming the show when they landed the role at just 3 years old. \u201cWhen we shot the episode \u2018Little Girl Lost,\u2019 I was the one that fell in the well,\u201d Lindsay revealed as Sidney added with a laugh, \u201cAnd I come out.\u201d<\/p>\n

After\u00a0Little House\u00a0<\/em>ended,\u00a0Sidney had a role in the 1983 movie\u00a0Hambone and Hillie<\/em>, according to\u00a0her IMDb profile, and hasn\u2019t acted in anything since. In a 2024 interview on the\u00a0Lament of Hope<\/em>\u00a0podcast, Sidney shared that she had been her mother\u2019s caretaker before she passed away a few years ago.<\/p>\n

Lindsay\u00a0had a role in the TV show\u00a0Matt Houston<\/em>\u00a0in 1983 and performed in\u00a0The\u00a0Vagina Monologues<\/em>\u00a0in 2016, according to\u00a0her IMDb profile. She met her husband, Danny Sanchez, on the\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>\u00a0set\u00a0in 1977. They reconnected decades later in 2007 through a mutual friend and eventually married in 2014. \u201cWe went up to the oak tree that we had first met under and got married, underneath the oak tree \u2026 by the Ingalls\u2019 home,\u201d Lindsay shared on the\u00a0Little House 50 Podcast<\/em>\u00a0in 2024.<\/p>\n

Katherine MacGregor (Harriet Oleson)<\/h2>\n

MacGregor played Mrs. Harriet Oleson, the feisty town gossip and wife to Nels Oleson, on\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>. \u201cI look for the humor of Mrs. Oleson,\u201d MacGregor said in an interview with the\u00a0Santa Cruz Sentinel<\/em>\u00a0in 1981, per\u00a0<\/em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/em>\u00a0\u201cShe was originally painted as just black-and-white mean. Anyone that mean has to be a fool. So I began mixing farce into it. I think the audience counts on seeing Mrs. Oleson fall on her fanny.\u201d<\/p>\n

After\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>, MacGregor focused on participating in local theater, according to\u00a0Deadline<\/em>. In 2018, the actress\u00a0passed away\u00a0at the age of 93.<\/p>\n

Richard Bull (Nels Oleson)<\/h2>\n

Bull had a very active acting career before landing the role of Nels Oleson, husband to Harriet and co-owner of the town\u2019s general store, on\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>. But when he first booked the role, he thought it\u2019d be for only one episode. \u201cI thought it was a one-shot and that was it. When my agent told me they wanted to sign me for a seven-year contract, I just about dropped my cookies. I was just flabbergasted,\u201d Bull said in\u00a0a behind-the-scenes interview.<\/p>\n

In the years following\u00a0Little House<\/em>,\u00a0Bull had several roles in movies and TV shows including\u00a0Let\u2019s Go to Prison<\/em>,\u00a0Sugar<\/em>,\u00a0Highway to Heaven<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0ER<\/em>.\u00a0In 2014, Bull died at the age of 89 after falling ill with\u00a0pneumonia.<\/p>\n

Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson)<\/h2>\n

At 12 years old, Arngrim landed the role of Nellie Oleson, the young villain of the show and Laura Ingalls\u2019 enemy. In a 2024 interview with\u00a0Cozi TV<\/em>, Arngrim said that while fans had strong feelings about the mean character she played for seven seasons, she realized the unique job perk it gave her.\u00a0\u201cEverybody goes to work and you have to be nice to people all day. How hard is this sometimes, right?\u201d she said. \u201cThe most amazing thing for me was that I didn’t have to do that. I got to go to work and yell and scream at people and throw things and break stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nowadays,\u00a0Arngrim, 62, is still an actor as well as a stand-up comedian. She also wrote an autobiography,\u00a0Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson<\/em>\u00a0and Learned to Love Being Hate<\/em>, and hosts a podcast,\u00a0The Alison Arngrim Show.<\/em><\/p>\n

Jonathan Gilbert (Willie Oleson)<\/h2>\n

Gilbert played Willie Oleson, Nellie\u2019s troublemaker younger brother on\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>. (In real life, Gilbert is related to his\u00a0Little House<\/em>\u00a0co-star Melissa Gilbert and\u00a0Roseanne<\/em>\u00a0actress\u00a0Sara Gilbert.)<\/p>\n

After\u00a0Little House<\/em>, Gilbert, now 57, left acting, moved to Manhattan, and went on to study finance. He currently works as a stockbroker, according to\u00a0his IMDb profile. At an event for the show\u2019s 50th anniversary, Gilbert said he realized that playing Willie was one of the best jobs he\u2019s ever had.\u00a0\u201cReally at the end of the day, there\u2019s nothing better than acting with the\u00a0Little House<\/em>\u00a0cast,\u201d he said. \u201cOf all the things that feels most like living, which was odd because I spent the whole time after\u00a0Little House\u00a0trying to figure out how to live. And what I didn\u2019t really realize [until the show\u2019s 50th anniversary] was that I was home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthew Labyorteaux (Albert Quinn Ingalls)<\/h2>\n

At 10 years old, Labyorteaux joined the cast of\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>\u00a0as Albert Quinn, the adopted son of the Ingalls.<\/p>\n

Since the show ended, Labyorteaux, 57, has had a steady acting career, most recently lending his voice to video games including\u00a0Yu-Gi-Oh! Cross Due<\/em>l\u00a0and\u00a0Star Wars: The Old Republic<\/em>. He also voiced a character in\u00a0Mulan<\/em>\u00a0and appeared in two episodes of the original\u00a0Night Court<\/em>\u00a0on NBC in 1989.<\/p>\n

Kevin Hagen (Dr. Hiram \u201cDoc\u201d Baker)<\/h2>\n

Hagen is best known for playing the town doctor, \u201cDoc\u201d Baker,\u201d on\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>. During\u00a0Little House<\/em>, Hagen also had roles in other TV shows including\u00a0M*A*S*H<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Quincy, M.E.<\/em>,<\/em>\u00a0in which he also played a doctor.<\/p>\n

In 1990, Hagen had a role in the movie\u00a0The Ambulance<\/em>. The actor\u00a0passed away in 2004\u00a0at the age of 77 following a battle with esophageal cancer.<\/p>\n

Victor French (Isaiah Edwards)<\/h2>\n

French played Mr. Edwards, the rugged frontiersman\u00a0who became a faithful friend to the Ingalls family, and continued to play the role in the series\u2019 many spinoff TV movies. Outside of the Walnut Grove universe, French starred in\u00a0Highway to Heaven<\/em>\u00a0as Mark Gordon, alongside his\u00a0Little House<\/em>\u00a0co-star Michael Landon.<\/p>\n

French\u00a0died in 1989\u00a0at the age of 54 from lung cancer.<\/p>\n

When Butler\u00a0was 22, the actor landed the role\u00a0of Almanzo Wilder on Season 6 of\u00a0Little House<\/em>, a farmer who eventually married Laura Ingalls. After\u00a0Little House<\/em>, Butler appeared in many TV series including\u00a0Who\u2019s The Boss?<\/em>,\u00a0The Love Boat<\/em>,\u00a0JAG<\/em>,\u00a0Murder She Wrote<\/em>, and\u00a0Buffy the Vampire Slayer.<\/em><\/p>\n
