Eddie Murphy is set to bring another Black icon to the screen. After portraying filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore in 2019\u2019s \u201cDolemite Is My Name,\u201d Murphy will reportedly bring the story of funk pioneer George Clinton to the screen in an as-yet-untitled biopic.<\/p>\n
According to\u00a0Deadline, in addition to once again showcasing his musical talent, the project will reunite Murphy with director Bill Condon, who directed the actor in his Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning role in \u201cDreamgirls.\u201d It will also continue Murphy\u2019s relationship with Amazon MGM Studios, where he previously produced and starred in \u201cCandy Cane Lane\u201d and \u201cComing 2 America,\u201d and will soon star in \u201cThe Pickup\u201d alongside Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson.<\/p>\n
Based on Clinton\u2019s acclaimed memoir \u201cBrothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain\u2019t That Funkin\u2019 Kinda Hard On You?\u201d Murphy will portray the P-Funk leader\u2019s \u201ctumultuous journey to founding musical collective Parliament-Funkadelic,\u201d reports Deadline. Following the innovative Afrofuturists\u2019 evolution and impact on modern music, the script will be penned by \u201cMudbound\u201d screenwriter Virgil Williams, working from an original draft by Max Werner.<\/p>\n
As\u00a0previously reported by theGrio, Clinton, widely recognized as the \u201cKing of Funk,\u201d was honored with a star on Hollywood\u2019s Walk of Fame in January 2024 during a star-studded ceremony. In an emotional acceptance speech, the musician stated, \u201cI learned early on in this journey that you are only as big as your latest hit. So you had to keep things in perspective, to keep from getting a big head. I found out that there would be times when it seemed like everyone knew your name. Then were times when no one knew you. I learned to respect the balance.\u201d<\/p>\n
While\u00a0the artist fondly known as \u201cDr. Funkenstein\u201d has yet to offer much commentary on his upcoming biopic aside from reposting the announcement, Clinton has continued to look to the future in recent weeks.
