Eddie Murphy\u00a0is set to portray musical legend\u00a0George Clinton\u00a0in\u00a0a new biopic\u00a0centered around the Parliament-Funk founder\u2019s life story.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Deadline<\/em>, Murphy has been cast in the starring role in the untitled film, which will be directed by Bill Condon for Amazon MGM Studios. Murphy and Condon previously worked together on the Academy Award-winning 2006 film,\u00a0Dreamgirls<\/em>, which Murphy appeared in and Condon directed.<\/p>\n

The screenplay for the film, which is being written by Virgil Williams, is based on Clinton\u2019s 2014 memoir,\u00a0Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain\u2019t That Funkin\u2019 Kinda Hard On You?<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Murphy\u2019s initial involvement in the film came at the behest of actress and producer Catherine Davis, a devoted George Clinton fan who first approached Murphy about his interest in portraying Clinton onscreen.<\/p>\n

The film will mark Murphy\u2019s fourth film project with Amazon MGM, as the New York native previously worked with the studio on the films\u00a0Candy Cane Lane<\/em>,\u00a0Coming 2 America<\/em>, and\u00a0The Pickup<\/em>, the latter in which he\u2019s set to star in opposite Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson.<\/p>\n

The George Clinton biopic will be produced by Murphy through Eddie Murphy Productions, Catherine Davis, John Davis via Davis Entertainment, and Greg Yolen. Eddie Murphy Productions\u2019 Charisse Hewitt-Webster, as well as George Clinton, Archie Ivy, and Jeff Jampol will executive produce the project.<\/p>\n

Beginning his career as\u00a0a songwriter for Motown, Clinton and his groups, The Parliaments and Funkadelic, found fame in the \u201970s, introducing their P-Funk sub-genre to the world through the albums\u00a0Mothership Connection<\/em>,\u00a0Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome<\/em>, and\u00a0One Nation Under a Groove<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In 1997, Clinton, along with fifteen other Parliament-Funkadelic members, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and later received Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards. The 83-year-old also\u00a0received his own star\u00a0on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this year.<\/p>\n
