John Force\u2019s journey from a struggling racer to a motorsports icon is a testament to his determination and resilience. Early in his career, his dream of becoming a champion was often met with doubt; his relentless pursuit of success was sustained more by personal grit than external support. For ten grueling seasons, Force fought for recognition in the NHRA, unable to secure a single victory. Nine times he reached the final round in Funny Car events, only to face defeat. Then, in a pivotal moment on June 28, 1987, Force, backed by his skilled crew chief Austin Coil, finally broke through. Winning the Grandnational in Montreal at the age of 38 marked the start of an enduring legacy in drag racing.<\/p>\n

The partnership between Force and Coil became the foundation of one of the most dominant dynasties in motorsports history. Their teamwork led to back-to-back championships in 1990 and 1991. When Bernie Fedderly joined as co-crew chief in 1992, the trio became a powerhouse, amassing an additional 12 titles over the years. Force continued his winning ways with various other crew chiefs, including Mike Neff, who guided him to his first championship in the NHRA\u2019s Countdown to the Championship format in 2010. Three years later, Force reclaimed victory with Jimmy Prock, demonstrating his adaptability and sustained excellence across eras.<\/p>\n
Force\u2019s accomplishments extend beyond the track. He broke barriers as the first drag racer to receive the prestigious Driver of the Year award in 1996, a recognition that spans all American motor sports. When the NHRA celebrated its 50th anniversary, Force was honored as the second-greatest racer in its history, only behind Don Garlits, a legendary figure in the sport. Force\u2019s influence grew through his own television show, Driving Force, which offered audiences a glimpse into the life of a drag racing icon and his family.<\/p>\n
Honored by multiple Halls of Fame, including those in Daytona Beach, Fort Worth, Talladega, Alta Loma, and the National Motorsports Press Association, Force\u2019s legacy is cemented in motorsport history. He even received international recognition in 2005 when he traveled to London to accept the John Bolster Award for lifetime achievement. In 2008, the Society of Automotive Engineers awarded him the MSEC Motorsports Achievement Award for his work on race car safety enhancements, which he pursued passionately following the tragic loss of fellow racer and friend Eric Medlen.<\/p>\n
Force continues to pursue new heights in NHRA competition. As he extends his record for Top 10 finishes and adds to the list of seasons in which he\u2019s secured at least one Wally trophy, Force remains unmatched in victories, final-round appearances, No. 1 qualifier stats, and racing rounds won. Now in his 70s, his drive shows no signs of slowing down.
