Astronomers have captured a rare close-up glimpse of a big star located approximately 160,000 light-years away from our own galaxy.<\/p>\n
The European Southern Observatory today released an image of WOH G64, a red supergiant star in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way.<\/p>\n
The image is remarkable, especially as it resembles the Eye of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings films. In reality, you’re looking at a dying star that’s roughly 1,500 to 2,000 times the size of our Sun and emits a lot of gas and dust.<\/p>\n

The image on the right is an artist’s depiction of the geometry of the structures surrounding the star, which includes a bright oval envelope and a fainter dusty torus.<\/p>\n
“For the first time, we have succeeded in taking a zoomed-in image of a dying star in a galaxy outside our own Milky Way,” scientist Keiichi Ohnaka states in the statement.<\/p>\n
Ohnaka’s team observed the star with the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer, which is based in northern Chile and has four telescopes. The site has also been utilizing GRAVITY, a device that combines the light from four telescopes to assist pick up more minute features from far dim objects. “Its improved sensitivity and resolution made the image of WOH G64 possible,” the European Space Organization stated.<\/p>\n

According to Ohnaka, the resulting image depicts WOH G64 as “an egg-shaped cocoon” that has been losing mass and may explode in a supernova. His crew was likewise startled to learn that the star had dimmed over the last decade.<\/p>\n
“This star is one of the most extreme of its kind, and any drastic change may bring it closer to an explosive end,” says astronomer Jacco van Loon, who has studied it since the 1990s.<\/p>\n
The ESO further states: “The new image shows that the cocoon is stretched out, which astonished scientists who predicted a different form based on earlier observations and computer models. The egg-like structure of the cocoon, according to the study, might be explained by either the star’s shedding or the effect of an undiscovered companion star.<\/p>\n
As WOH G64 dims, it will become more difficult to observe. However, enhancements to the GRAVITY instrument promise to help astronomers monitor the fading star.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
