Universal’s\u00a0Wicked<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0has emerged as something of a box office phenomenon. The movie has been breaking records ever since its hotly anticipated release earlier in November, when it clashed with\u00a0Ridley Scott<\/strong>‘s\u00a0Gladiator II<\/strong><\/em>. Not only did it comfortably win the duel,\u00a0Wicked<\/em>\u00a0has since generated over twice as much at the domestic box office than the swords-and-sandals epic. With over $300 million domestically, the film is now\u00a0among the highest-grossing musicals of all time<\/strong>. And because it’s only a couple of weeks into its theatrical run, this means that it has a strong chance of becoming the highest-grossing movie musical ever made.<\/p>\n

Directed by\u00a0Jon M. Chu<\/strong>,\u00a0Wicked<\/em>\u00a0has made\u00a0$330 million at the domestic box office so far<\/strong>. This puts it at the\u00a0number four spot on the list of the highest-grossing musicals of all time<\/strong>, behind\u00a0Frozen<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0($400 million),\u00a0Frozen II<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0($477 million), and Disney’s live-action remake of\u00a0Beauty and the Beast<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0($504 million).\u00a0Wicked<\/em>\u00a0has been projected to crack the $500 million mark domestically by the end of its run, which should put it in close competition with\u00a0Beauty and the Beast<\/em>\u00a0in a few weeks. What this also means is that\u00a0Wicked<\/em>\u00a0is currently\u00a0the second-highest grossing live-action movie musical of all time<\/strong>, having overtaken the likes of\u00a0The Little Mermaid<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0($298 million),\u00a0Wonka<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0($218 million),\u00a0Grease<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0($188 million) and\u00a0The Greatest Showman<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0($174 million).<\/p>\n

On the all-time worldwide chart, with a running haul of $465 million,\u00a0Wicked<\/em>\u00a0recently broke into the top 10. The movie currently trails\u00a0La La Land<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0($506 million),\u00a0The Little Mermaid<\/em>\u00a0remake ($569 million),\u00a0Mamma Mia!\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>($584 million) and\u00a0Wonka\u00a0<\/em>($628 million). Three movie musicals have cracked the $1 billion mark globally, which seems like a difficult task for\u00a0Wicked<\/em>. While the film has performed remarkably stateside,\u00a0it trails slightly behind in overseas markets<\/strong>. This could be attributed to the source Broadway play’s lack of popularity outside North America, or it could be because of the film’s absence of standard movie stars.\u00a0Wicked<\/em>\u00a0features\u00a0Cynthia Erivo<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Ariana Grande<\/strong>\u00a0in the lead roles.<\/p>\n
