{"id":4878,"date":"2024-12-16T18:47:47","date_gmt":"2024-12-16T18:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newssoccer.uk\/?p=4878"},"modified":"2024-12-16T18:47:47","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T18:47:47","slug":"heartwarming-former-world-snooker-champion-terry-griffiths-dies-aged-77","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newssoccer.uk\/?p=4878","title":{"rendered":"HEARTWARMING: Former world snooker champion Terry Griffiths dies aged 77"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article-first-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4879\" src=\"https:\/\/newssoccer.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/18829936-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newssoccer.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/18829936-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newssoccer.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/18829936-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newssoccer.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/18829936-750x501.jpg 750w, https:\/\/newssoccer.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/18829936.jpg 962w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Former world snooker champion\u00a0Terry\u00a0Griffiths\u00a0has died at the age of 77 after a long battle with dementia, his family has confirmed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"po-inline-articlewall-partialarticle-closable\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"po-inline-articlegate-partialarticle\">\n<div id=\"subscription-content\">\n<p>Griffiths, who hails from Llanelli in south Wales,\u00a0came through the qualifying rounds to win the 1979 Crucible title, and also won the Masters and the UK Championship to complete the sport\u2019s illustrious \u2018triple crown\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He was a fixture at the top end of the snooker during the 1980s and early 1990s, reaching at least the quarter-finals of the World Championship for nine straight years, and reaching the final again in 1988.<\/p>\n<p>He retired from playing after a first-round defeat to Mark Williams at the 1997 World Championship.<\/p>\n<p>In later years\u00a0Griffiths\u00a0became an accomplished coach, inspiring the likes of Williams, Stephen Hendry and Mark Allen.<\/p>\n<h2>Terry Griffiths dies aged 77<\/h2>\n<p>Griffiths\u2019 son Wayne, making the announcement of his father&#8217;s death on\u00a0Facebook, said: \u201cTo our friends and snooker followers in general, we are deeply saddened to share the news of our loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerry\u00a0Griffiths\u00a0OBE passed away peacefully on 1st December, after a lengthy battle with dementia. He was surrounded by his family in his beloved home-town in South Wales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA proud Welshman,\u00a0Terry\u00a0was born in Llanelli, brought pride to Llanelli and now he has found peace in Llanelli. Absolutely heartbroken. He is a legend of the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerry\u00a0was a very witty guy. Whenever I was at the Welsh Open, he would come over and make a joke. I had a good connection with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is hard to connect with some of the older generation but he was someone I felt I could get along with. It is a sad day for Welsh sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former world champion Shaun Murphy, on X (formerly Twitter),\u00a0said: \u201cJust hearing the news that\u00a0Terry\u00a0Griffiths\u00a0has passed away.
