The Detroit-area defensive back emerged from Belleville High School as a highly regarded four-star prospect before ultimately signing with Michigan. He later entered the transfer portal and joined Missouri, where he is currently listed on the Tigers’ roster.

Dotson was a standout at Belleville, where his versatility made him an attractive prospect for major college programs. He was capable of contributing in the secondary while also making an impact on offense and special teams. During his junior season at Detroit Jesuit, he recorded 66 tackles and three interceptions while also producing significant numbers as a receiver and returner.

His recruiting stock continued to rise during his senior season. ESPN listed Dotson as a four-star safety in the 2025 class, while other recruiting services also placed him among the stronger prospects nationally. Rivals’ current historical profile gives him a 94.27 industry rating and ranks him No. 94 nationally, No. 12 at safety and No. 2 in Michigan for that recruiting cycle.

That profile explains why Dotson attracted attention from programs across the country.

His offer list included Michigan, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Michigan State, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, Kansas, Purdue and others. The competition for his commitment eventually centered around several major programs.

Initially, Dotson committed to Pittsburgh in May 2024. However, Michigan continued to recruit him aggressively, particularly after his official visit to Ann Arbor for the Wolverines’ matchup with Oregon. On November 20, 2024, Dotson announced that he was flipping his commitment from Pitt to Michigan.

The decision was particularly significant because Michigan represented the in-state option for the Detroit-area standout.

Dotson officially signed with Michigan during the early signing period in December 2024. At that point, he was viewed as an important addition to the Wolverines’ defensive backfield.

His freshman season brought valuable experience. According to Missouri’s official roster, Dotson appeared in 12 games for Michigan during the 2025 season, recording 11 tackles, nine of them solo, along with an interception and a pass breakup. He also contributed on special teams and saw action at both safety and nickel.

Then came another major chapter.

Following his freshman season, Dotson entered the transfer portal and eventually committed to Missouri in January 2026. His current Missouri profile lists him as a sophomore defensive back, and the Tigers have already used him in their secondary and on special teams.

The move to Missouri gives Dotson another opportunity to establish himself as a major contributor at the collegiate level.

At 6-foot-1, Dotson possesses the size and versatility that helped make him a nationally recruited defensive back. His high-school production also demonstrated that he could influence games in multiple ways rather than being limited to one role.

Missouri’s official statistics show that Dotson made an immediate impact during the 2026 season. In the Tigers’ opening game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, he recorded three solo tackles, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble. He followed that performance with three tackles against Kansas.

Those performances underline why his development remains worth monitoring.

While the supplied headline describes Notre Dame landing Dotson over major SEC offers and calls him the No. 1 overall player, the available recruiting records do not support those specific claims. Instead, Dotson’s documented story is that of a four-star 2025 prospect who chose Michigan after initially committing to Pittsburgh, played his freshman season with the Wolverines and subsequently transferred to Missouri.

For Notre Dame fans, the broader recruiting takeaway is still familiar: highly rated defensive backs continue to be among the most closely followed prospects in college football. But in Dotson’s case, the record currently points to Missouri rather than a new Notre Dame commitment.

His journey also demonstrates how quickly college football recruiting can change. A player can move from high-school recruiting battles to a major Power Four program, gain experience and then use the transfer portal to begin another chapter elsewhere.

For Dotson, that chapter is currently unfolding in Columbia.

And with his early 2026 contributions already appearing on Missouri’s stat sheet, the former four-star recruit has an opportunity to turn the potential that made him one of Michigan’s notable recruiting additions into sustained production at the collegiate level.

Locked In:”Notre Dame Snags 4-Star DB Elijah Dotson, No. 1 Overall, Over top SEC big Offers.Ohio, Texas, Cleveland, Tennessee”…. Elijah Dotson’s name has already been part of one of the more interesting recruiting stories of recent years.
