Former Springboks head coach Nick Mallett has explained why he thinks current head coach\u00a0Rassie Erasmus\u00a0has become so successful in a role that he held from 1997 to 2000.<\/p>\n
Erasmus will be looking to win the Springboks\u2019s third straight World Cup after victories at the 2023 World Cup in France, following on from the triumph in\u00a0Japan back in 2019.<\/p>\n
Plenty of water has flowed under Pulteney Bridge in Bath since Gary Gold dramatically left his position as director of rugby in December 2013.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
The 68-year-old former head coach said on the\u00a0Boks Office<\/em>\u00a0podcast that he believes his success comes from experience in multiple different situations.<\/p>\n \u201cGoing through, he was successful with Free State and won the Currie Cup, and then came to Western Province, got into the final of Super Rugby. He went to\u00a0Munster\u00a0and was successful there,\u201d Mallett said.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s always been successful. Initially, it was his technical ability that shone through but now it\u2019s his emotional intelligence that has really developed since he\u2019s got into his 50s.\u201d<\/p>\n Mallett praised Erasmus\u2019s ability to understand the players and their lives, making the players feel comfortable in their positions.<\/p>\n \u201cHis ability to understand that every single person is different, you press different buttons with different people, respect all the cultures. Be inclusive but don\u2019t force people \u2013 we\u2019re not all one, we\u2019re all different.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHis ability to handle a\u00a0Makazole Mapimpi\u00a0at the same time as a\u00a0Pieter-Steph du Toit\u00a0or\u00a0Duane Vermeulen\u00a0is extraordinary.<\/p>\n Erasmus\u2019s rugby brain is one of the best in the business, but Mallett thinks his statistical thinking is unique to other coaches.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s absolutely honest with the players, so every guy knows where he sits, what he\u2019s got to do to get better and he always presents stats to the players.<\/p>\n \u201cHe says to them that the reason you\u2019re not playing is the other guy made 18 tackles and you made 14, and you gave four penalties away.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s statistically driven but caring at the same time, which is an unusual combination.\u201d<\/p>\n Mallett isn\u2019t worried about if Erasmus will ever be sacked, instead, he\u2019s concerned about what the Springboks do after the 2027 World Cup in\u00a0Australia\u00a0where Erasmus may look for another challenge.<\/p>\n \u201cThe worrying thing is what will happen when he goes.
