Osaka retired from the second set of the China Open on Tuesday, October 1, owing to a back issue. Despite the fact that she was competing against her, US star Gauff approached Osaka’s bench and offered to help her carry her bags and leave the court.

In a video of the incident posted on X (previously known as Twitter), Gauff asks Osaka if she is okay or needs any assistance, to which Osaka responds in a shocked voice, “Really?” Gauff then took one of Osaka’s tennis bags to hold as the two walked off the court amid applause from the crowd.

The match between the two tennis superstars was entering its third set when Osaka retired. Osaka won the opening set 6-3, while Gauff grabbed the second 6-4. Following Osaka’s forfeit, Gauff will progress to the quarterfinals.

It is not the first time the two U.S. Open champions have shown support for one another. In 2019, after they met for the first time at the U.S. Open and Osaka won, she saw Gauff, who was 15 at the time, was crying and hugged her.

“When I shook her hand, I noticed she was tearing up somewhat. “Then it reminded me of how young she was,” Osaka told reporters following the match. “I was thinking it would be wonderful if she addressed the folks that came to watch her play. “They were cheering for her.”

Four years later, Osaka, who had just given birth to her daughter Shai, was in the audience as Gauff won her semifinal match and advanced to the 2023 US Open final. In her post-match interview, Gauff expressed gratitude to Osaka for coming.

“Naomi, I remember the moment we had on this court … it meant a lot to me,” she remarked. “I am very pleased to have you back on tour, and I want to meet your daughter. Thank you so much for coming, and hello to your mother as well.”
