In a heartwarming display of gratitude and community spirit, South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers recently returned to his roots in Florence, South Carolina, with generosity in mind. The talented athlete donated $16,000 to the South Florence football program during a special meet-and-greet event with fans. This substantial contribution represents Sellers’ commitment to giving back to the institution that helped shape his athletic career.
“I’m just really giving back to the school,” Sellers explained in an interview. “Just for everything they’ve done for me, my brothers, all the other players who went to colleges, the development, the relationships.” His connection to South Florence runs deep – during his senior year, Sellers led the school to its first-ever state championship with a remarkable performance. That historic season saw him accumulate nearly 4,300 total yards while accounting for an impressive 62 touchdowns. His championship game performance was particularly spectacular, throwing for 260 yards and rushing for 192 yards while responsible for six touchdowns overall.
Since joining the Gamecocks, Sellers has continued to build on his impressive high school career. As a redshirt freshman, he earned prestigious recognitions including national freshman offensive player of the year, freshman All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America, and SEC freshman of the year. These accomplishments were accompanied by the Steve Wadiak award, designating him as the Gamecocks’ MVP. His statistical performance has been equally notable, appearing in 12 of 13 games last season while throwing for 2,534 yards with 18 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. His completion rate of 65.6% ranks seventh in school history for a single season, and he contributed significantly to the ground game with 674 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
Sellers established himself among the SEC’s elite performers, finishing in the top ten in numerous statistical categories including total offense (seventh), total touchdowns (seventh), passing yards per game (ninth), and pass efficiency (third). His outstanding performance against Texas A&M represented a breakthrough moment in his collegiate career. During that contest, he accumulated 244 passing yards with two touchdowns while adding 106 rushing yards in a decisive 44-20 victory over the then 10th-ranked Aggies. This exceptional showing earned him multiple honors including the Manning Award “Star of Stars,” SEC freshman of the week, and Davey O’Brien co-national quarterback of the week recognition.
As Sellers’ profile rises in college football, his opportunities in the Name, Image, and Likeness marketplace continue to expand. His recent partnership with Collegiate Legends resulted in a custom action figure featuring the quarterback in his white Gamecocks helmet, garnet jersey with his number 16, and white pants with garnet and black trim. The deal demonstrates Sellers’ ongoing commitment to community service, as it includes provisions for him to donate action figures to children in Columbia, South Carolina. Through these endeavors, Sellers exemplifies how college athletes can leverage their success to create positive impacts in the communities that supported their development.
