Feliciano Lopez has commented on Emma Raducanu’s new coach, Francisco Roig, who was previously a longtime coach for Rafael Nadal. According to reports, Raducanu has hired Roig ahead of the US Open to help her continue her recent surge in form.
Roig, a former top-60 player and French Open doubles quarter-finalist, worked with Nadal for nearly two decades, from 2005 to 2022. He has also had a year-long stint with Matteo Berrettini. A key element of his coaching style, as mentioned by Feliciano Lopez in Christopher Clarey’s book *The Masters*, is his technical expertise. Lopez stated that Roig is one of the best technical coaches in the world, with a unique ability to notice subtle details in a player’s game that others might miss. This specificity, according to Lopez, allowed Roig to be very precise in his coaching of Nadal.

The partnership between Raducanu and Roig is considered an interesting one, given Roig’s history of primarily working with male players. The hope is that Roig’s success with his past clients will translate to a positive impact on Raducanu’s performance. The two have reportedly already begun working together in Cincinnati, in preparation for the upcoming US Open, where Raducanu won her first Grand Slam title in 2021.
