Dolly Parton & Family: Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith And Fables, the superstar’s latest album, reaches just one Billboard chart this week. The project, which sees the country musician work with many of her family members–both those still with us and those who have departed, via recordings–fails to reach most of the top rankings.
The collaborative project doesn’t reach the Billboard 200. It also didn’t sell well enough to land on the Top Album Sales chart, either. Those are the two tallies that many would assume that Parton would not only appear on with her latest effort, but perhaps even come close to the summit.
Just one year ago, Parton reached a new career high on the all-encompassing ranking of the most-consumed albums in the country . Rockstar, her lengthy and star-studded tribute to the rock genre, opened and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. It brought the singer to the top 10 for only the third time in her career, and it beat the No. 6 position that her only other two wins rose to.
Just one year later, it wouldn’t be strange to expect Parton’s quick follow-up to perform relatively well. Another top 10 debut on the Billboard 200 didn’t seem like it was in the cards, but for the title to fail to reach the list in any capacity is odd.Dolly Parton & Family does debut on the Bluegrass Albums chart, though, and it’s a big hit for the singer. The familial project launches at No. 1, earning the Grammy winner her second career champion on the list of the most-consumed bluegrass-only releases.
She has now scored four top 10s on the Bluegrass Albums chart throughout her decades as a famous face and voice in country, which is a closely related style. Dolly Parton & Family marks her fifth trip to the tally in any slot, so her track record on the tally is actually fairly impressive…even if she’s running the show with a full-length that didn’t perform well enough to appear anywhere else.
