If you’re the optimistic kind, you could praise James Cook and point out that the Bills’ defense forced some crucial turnovers against the Patriots on Sunday. Josh Allen struggled with consistency as a passer and locating running lanes as a scrambler. He ended up having one of his worst statistical performances of the season, and the Bills had to hold on until the end to win. With 324 yards, 17 offensive points, an end-zone pick, and some badly timed penalties, the offense perhaps looked as terrible as it had since the Baltimore-Houston two-game series in Weeks 4 and 5. Buffalo will face New England again in Week 18, and the Week 17 game against the Jets should provide some added motivation, given how close the two teams battled earlier this season. With enough to fix up (and, depending on what happens in Chiefs-Steelers on Wednesday, the top seed could still be in play), the Bills should focus on sharpening that edge a little more

With enough to fix up (and, depending on what happens in Chiefs-Steelers on Wednesday, the top seed could still be in play), the Bills should focus on sharpening that edge a little more. In his first game since running back David Montgomery sustained a major knee injury, Jahmyr Gibbs picked up 109 yards and a touchdown on the ground, caught four passes for 45 yards, and served as the decoy in a creative trick play that rekindled the positive feelings in a win over the Bears. Even against a team that has now lost nine consecutive games, the Lions made a significant message by demonstrating that they can handle business despite the injuries and coming off their first loss in three months. The Commanders’ triumph became much more significant when they came back to defeat the Eagles, who were chasing Detroit for the NFC’s top spot. The Lions are back in business, however the defense will remain a weekly concern. The unit made more plays against the Bears than it had in the previous two weeks, but there was still a lot to tidy up.
