As the New York Jets approach the end of the season and begin their job search, it’s likely that some of the contenders for general manager and head coach will be from the Detroit Lions.
If Jets owner Woody Johnson hasn’t already decided to do so, his players may be hinting.
According to ESPN, Jets safety Chuck Clark spoke on Monday about creating a winning culture in New York. He cited the Lions as a good example.
This comes a week after quarterback Aaron Rodgers specifically criticised the Lions’ leadership as they rose to the top of the NFC.
In many ways, the National Football League is a copycat league. It is also a league in which teams frequently raid other teams that are having significant success. The Lions are on a run they haven’t had in decades, and it could lead to their first Super Bowl participation in team history.
Once the regular season is over, New York can begin interviewing applicants who are related to other teams. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, there are numerous potential possibilities, one of whom has a link to the Jets.
It all starts with Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, a former Jets Pro Bowl defensive back who appears to be a future head coach. He is apparently interested in the Jets position. If the Lions receive the top seed and a bye, Glenn might conduct an interview at that time.
The Lions also have a well-known offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, who is considered to be the most popular candidate on the carousel who has not ever been a head coach.
Ray Agnew, assistant general manager in the Detroit front office, has over 20 years of experience in NFL personnel and coaching. Prior to that, he was a defensive lineman with the Rams for three years, winning a Super Bowl ring.
Finally, there is John Dorsey, the senior personnel director. He meets a requirement that the Jets may be searching for, but the other three do not: previous job experience. He previously served as general manager for Kansas City and Cleveland.
As Kansas City’s general manager, he draughted most of the core of the club that won three Super Bowls, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes II. He also competed in the NFL.
Last week, New York interviewed three candidates for general manager: former Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff, former Tennessee Titans GM Jon Robinson, and Senior Bowl director and former NFL scout Jim Nagy.
