Ryan Phillippe personally confirmed that he was in talks to play Cap during an interview with MTV in 2010.
“[I] actually am going in to meet on Captain America, which is kind of cool,” he admitted at the time. “After Superman, he was kind of my favorite.”It is not clear how far along he got in the audition process, and he has not played a role in the MCU.
Kellan Lutz famously played Emmett Cullen in the Twilight franchise. However, he was also ready to dip his toes in the MCU. Interestingly, in a 2014 interview with Collider, he revealed that he was up for two parts. One of those was Captain America. His other role was Thor, which went to Chris Hemsworth.
“I got pretty close for Captain America, but Chris Evans got it, and he deserves it,” he said. “He is Captain America. I’m happy for them. I don’t get competitive. I do my best. If I get something, then it was meant to be. If I don’t, then it wasn’t.”
He continued, noting that he felt right for The Legend of Hercules. “I didn’t grow up loving Thor, or really knowing much about Thor or Captain America, but with Hercules, I did.”
