Texas’s HOUSTON — The energetic Tejano and Latin band Avizo, who have become mainstays of Houston’s music scene, have returned with a new music video for the song “La Cacahuata,” which expertly combines elements of both the past and the present. The track, which is set to appear on the forthcoming album En Mi Barrio, is a modern take on a timeless classic that was written and recorded more than half a century ago. The classic song gets a soulful makeover in Avizo’s performance, which gives it fresh life while paying homage to its musical origins.
“I was trying to find a way to showcase our horn section,” Robert Dorantes, bandleader of Avizo, tells Tejano Nation. “I’ve got some great horn players that have been with me the whole ride for 40 years.”
The film, shot in Houston’s historic Hidalgo Park by director Lupe Moya, is a love letter to the East End area where several of the band members grew up and began their musical adventure. For Avizo, Hidalgo Park is more than simply a backdrop—it’s a place soaked in memories, where they performed as school students, connected with the neighbourhood, and built the ties that would eventually define their unique sound.
“I had the video shot at a park where a lot of us in the band grew up at, did shows there,” added Dorantes. “So there’s a lot of history at that park for us and that’s why the CD is going to be called En El Barrio.”
With a “then and now” idea, the music video juxtaposes imagines the band’s early days portrayed by young family members with present-day footage of Avizo performing in the same familiar locales. This blend of history and present acts as a visual witness to their growth and success, while also paying honour to the community that nourished them. The movie captures the essence of the East End, revealing the heart and soul of Houston that continues to inspire Avizo’s music.
At its core, the video celebrates community, connection, and the authenticity that has always been important to Avizo’s brand. Through the film, the band confirms their love for their city, their roots, and the people who have supported them throughout the years. As the next album’s title suggests, Avizo’s connection to their barrio—and to the people who helped define their sound—remains as strong as ever. Even as the years pass, the band’s passion to their music, their heritage, and their community is unshakeable.
”La Cacahuata” by Avizo is available on all digital music platforms and expect for the widely anticipated new album in early 2025.
