Naomi Osaka, a tennis star, and her partner, Cordae, welcomed their baby Shai in Los Angeles in June 2023. And now, the Grand Slam champion is enjoying the benefits of motherhood.
On her Instagram account, Osaka encouraged her followers to ask her a series of questions for a Q&A, and one fan asked, “How’s motherhood?” In response, Osaka uploaded a photo of her 1-year-old daughter’s Peppa Pig toy with the caption, “Awesome. Shai is running after me now, calling out’mommy’. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this much joy.”
Osaka’s revelation comes just weeks after she announced her daughter in an Etsy promotional video. While sharing her love of White Elephant gatherings during the holidays, she disclosed whether Shai was on Santa’s bad or nice list, and the toddler appears to have been on her best behavior.
In the clip, Osaka says, “Shai is always on the lovely list, but she can be a touch wicked at times. She’ll undoubtedly get a lot of presents.”
After four years of dating Cordae, Osaka revealed her pregnancy in 2023 by posting an ultrasound shot. At the time, she wrote: “Can’t wait to get back on the court, but here’s a little life update for 2023.”
After a year and countless maternity photos, the athlete and proud mom is back on the court. Following her return to the 2024 Australian Open, Osaka has committed to two additional tournaments in 2025.
According to ESPN, Osaka said in a statement, “Being a mother has changed my life significantly. I believe it shifted my outlook on several issues. Giving delivery was one of the most difficult experiences I have ever had. It has definitely made me feel like I am physically capable of doing a lot.”I want to show Shai that she is capable of anything, thus that is one of my primary goals and motivations for returning here.
