Olympic silver medalist Sha’Carri Richardson has spoken out about when and why she uses her voice, highlighting the need of purpose, positivism, and keeping grounded.
The famed sprinter, known for both her athletic ability and her frank demeanor, discussed how she manages her platform in a world of continual public scrutiny.
Richardson emphasized that she only speaks up when she believes it is in the larger interest, when her comments can promote peace, optimism, and real understanding.
“I feel compelled to use my voice only when it serves the larger good. “It’s only when I feel compelled by something in my heart and spirit to speak on something that will bring more peace and positivity than negativity,” Richardson said in a recent Essence interview.
She stated that her goal is to increase the world’s understanding of track and field, ensuring that it receives attention beyond the Olympics, which most people watch every four years.
“I would love to continue to use my voice or my essence and the platform I do have to show and to vocalize exactly what track and field is to the world,” said the athlete.
On the other hand, Richardson acknowledged that she chooses to be silent, citing a lesson from activist Stacey Abrams.
She quoted Abrams as saying, “If you wouldn’t take advice from them, don’t take critique from them.” Richardson has found this understanding useful in managing public commentary and internet criticism.
She explained how she keeps grounded by focusing on individuals who truly know her, rather than the ephemeral images visible online.
“At the end of the day, you need to be in sync. “When you’re a star player, you have to be grounded and create your own environment where people can see your rawness, ugliness, and beauty on a daily basis,” Richardson explained.
In response to internet detractors, she recognized their presence but did not concentrate on their ideas.
“People who get online and leave a lot of remarks. “They put their phones down and see the life they truly live,” she said.
Instead, Richardson prefers to focus her attention on those closest to her, those who see her actual self every day.
In a confident and assertive tone, she closed with a message to her detractors: “The people that be online, they’re going to watch no matter what, so watch, baby.”
