Sources say Quinn Ewers still plans to declare for the NFL Draft after this season, paving the way for Arch Manning to take over in 2025. Manning is locked in with Texas and coach Steve Sarkisian, with no plans to transfer. Right now, both are dialed in on Clemson. pic.twitter.com/BYdC5EIgFG

Quinn Ewers, the starting quarterback, has made it to the College Football Playoff for the second consecutive season.
Ewers, a junior, is eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft. The quarterback hasn’t confirmed whether or not 2024 will be his final season in Austin. There is a lot of conjecture regarding his future, including whether he will enter the draft, return to Texas in 2025, or transfer elsewhere. Consider Ewers’ statements and reports on his future plans for 2025.
Will Quinn Ewers transfer?
Nobody has a crystal ball, therefore it’s impossible to predict exactly what Ewers will do. If the Longhorns make a deep playoff run and Ewers performs well, he may feel like he’s showed scouts enough over three years.
In 33 games with the Longhorns, he has thrown 8,321 yards, 62 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. Texas has a total 23-4 record over the last two seasons, including back-to-back playoff appearances.
In the days coming up to Texas’ game against the Clemson Tigers, Ewers was asked about his 2025 NFL draft aspirations. He suggested that he hadn’t given it much thought.
“I’m not sure yet, I’m just trying to win these games,” Ewers said when questioned about going for the NFL. “I haven’t thought about anything beyond that.”
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian revealed this week what he advises players with promising NFL futures:
“I just tell them all, focus on what we’re doing right now,” Sarkisian told The Austin America-Stateman. “And I do that with some of them because the men want to know. They are hearing from agents and so on. To improve their future prospects, players should excel in the College Football Playoff, as these games will be examined by the NFL.According to CBS Sports’ most recent 2025 prospect rankings, Ewers is ranked 54th overall but fourth-best signal caller, trailing only Miami’s Cam Ward, Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe. According to Sporting News’ most recent 2025 mock draft, Ewers will be selected in the first round, 28th overall, by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ewers appears to be a first- or second-round draft candidate right now, but it’s very early in the NFL draft evaluation process.
However, there are some injuries that Ewers has sustained. He missed two games this season due to a severe ankle sprain. He also missed time in 2023 and 2022 while recovering from shoulder and clavicle ailments.
There’s also the Arch Manning issue to consider. The redshirt freshman quarterback arrived on college as a highly regarded five-star prospect. He was anticipated to back up Ewers early in his Longhorn career, but has seen action this season. In his two starts for an injured Ewers against Louisiana-Monroe and Mississippi State, he completed 41 passes for 583 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions.
He’s also been prolific with his legs, rushing for 100 yards and four touchdowns this season, including a 53-yarder. Could Ewers play more freely at a new school without a highly regarded quarterback waiting in the wings? Maybe. However, Ewers’ entry into the portal is not imminent.
