MADISON, Wisconsin — Wisconsin freshman quarterback Mabrey Mettauer intends to transfer, according to The Athletic, which confirmed this on Saturday night with his father, Mark. The move means that the Badgers will not have a single scholarship quarterback on the roster after this season.Mettauer, a 6-foot-4, 230-pounder from The Woodlands, Texas, was a four-star recruit and the first to pledge to Wisconsin’s 2024 class under coach Luke Fickell and offensive coordinator/quarterback coach Phil Longo. He enrolled early to participate in spring practices and surpassed Nick Evers for third-team snaps in April. Evers eventually transferred to Connecticut.
Mettauer was promoted to backup quarterback after starter Tyler Van Dyke suffered a season-ending ACL tear in his right knee during the third game of the season against Alabama. He played 16 snaps in three games behind Braedyn Locke. Mettauer completed his sole pass for two yards and ran for two yards. He’ll have four years of eligibility left.
The decision comes after Fickell sacked Longo, whom Mettauer came to Wisconsin to play for, with two games left in the season. Fickell replaced Longo and his air raid system with Kansas offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes, who will adopt a more run-oriented approach. Mark cited concern about Mabrey’s future at Wisconsin and how he would fit into a fresh strategy with an altered quarterback room as the motivator for the transfer.
