The Alabama football coaching staff is taking shape for the 2025 season, with Al.com’s Nick Kelly reporting that Jason Jones will join the Crimson Tide coaching staff as an assistant to the defensive backs.
Matt Zenitz of 247Sports first reported Alabama football’s interest in adding Jones to the staff last week, but the two sides have finally reached an agreement.
Jones, a Tuscaloosa native, played for Central before entering the Crimson Tide and helping the team capture the SEC championship in 1999. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Capstone in 2003, before taking his first on-field position teaching cornerbacks at Tulsa in 2005. He has taught defensive backs at Ole Miss, Indiana, and, most recently, North Carolina, and was slated to take over as cornerbacks coach at ECU before electing to join DeBoer’s staff instead.
He will assist Maurice Linguist in coaching Alabama’s defensive backs after Colin Hitchsler was fired at the end of the season. Jones will not be an on-field coach, but new NCAA rules allow assistants to coach during practices and recruit.
Jones collaborated with Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Womack and DeBoer in the Big 10, when they both coached the Indiana Hoosiers.
