Rail passengers heading in and out of Edinburgh were advised to ‘do not travel’ on Sunday.
This comes amid a number of weather warnings in Scotland and England, as well as maintenance work. TransPennine Express advised clients not to travel between Manchester Airport and Edinburgh on January 5.
Trains were unable to use the line due to scheduled engineering work. Replacement buses were also pulled owing to ‘heavy snowfall’ in northwest England.
TransPennine Express posted to X: “Service update: Customers are advised not to travel on the following routes today (January 5).”
“Manchester Airport connects Glasgow Central and Edinburgh via Preston. Manchester Airport serves Leeds, York, and Newcastle.
“This is due to the excessive snowfall that is seriously affecting roads across the Pennines and North West, which prevents bus replacement services from running for planned engineering work. Customers on all other routes within the TPE network are asked to postpone their journeys until later today and to be prepared for significant disruption and possibly postponement of journeys.

“Customers with tickets across the affected routes can defer their journeys, and any tickets already purchased for travel today (Sunday 5 January) will be valid on Monday 6 January.”
This comes amid various weather warnings in Scotland and England. An Amber warning is in effect for the majority of northern England from 9 p.m. on Saturday until 11.59 p.m. on Sunday.
Residents were advised that snow could cause interruption. Closer to home, a yellow warning for snow covers the Scottish Borders and West Lothian from midnight on Saturday until 12pm on Monday.
