The Denver Broncos won their first game of the season, defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26-7, and head coach Sean Payton issued a surprising statement about his squad following the blowout victory.
“It wasn’t our best game, but it was good enough today,” Sean Payton told Andrew Mason of Denver Sports 104.3.
It’s interesting to hear that Payton believes the Broncos can still improve. The Buccaneers were one of the more impressive teams in the first two weeks of the season, so it was amazing that Denver could go on the road and perform so well against them. The Broncos’ defence performed as expected, while rookie quarterback Bo Nix had the best game of his brief career against a good defence. He completed 25 of 36 throws for 216 yards and rushed for a touchdown.
According to Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette, Payton also discussed his rookie quarterback, stating that Bo Nix never lost confidence heading into this game. Nix had two difficult games to start the season against the Seattle Seahawks and the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s not easy playing on the road in Seattle, let alone in your first NFL game, and the Steelers have one of the league’s finest defences. It’s positive that Nix performed well against another quality defence.
Bo Nix and the Broncos hope to build on their impressive performance.
The Broncos’ road trip to face the New York Jets, who looked excellent against the New England Patriots on Thursday, will make things much more difficult.
It will be another difficult test for Nix, and the Broncos defence will have to do its best to contain Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson. A strong showing in that game would be positive for the remainder of the season.
