DETROIT (AP) — Dan Campbell feels the Detroit Lions’ defence remains as powerful as it was in the first three games of the season.
He concedes that it didn’t appear in Monday night’s 42-29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
“I don’t believe what we saw yesterday is our defence,” Campbell remarked. “I don’t believe anyone is claiming that it was our best performance. I felt Geno (Smith) played an outstanding game, but we can do much better. We need to be much better.
The Seahawks gained 516 total yards, with Smith accounting for 395 yards passing and 38 yards rushing. Kenneth Walker III totalled 116 yards and three touchdowns, while DK Metcalf received seven passes for 104 yards.
Seattle set an NFL record with 38 first downs in a loss, and penalties cost the Lions an additional 101 yards. Starting cornerbacks Carlton Davis III and Terrion Arnold were both flagged for pass interference or holding seven times, a problem Arnold has struggled with in his first four games.
“Twelve penalties is a lot,” Campbell explained Monday night. “Carlton was up against a good receiver — a physical receiver — so we had to be physical as well.” We need to tidy things up; we can’t take 12 penalties every game, so we’ll keep working on our craft.”
