According to Pete Nakos of On3, Troy transfer offensive tackle Daniel King committed to the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday evening.
The All-Sun Belt pick has 2,642 snaps in his FBS career. In addition, he has made several starts at offensive tackle over his career. King had previously indicated ambitions to pursue the 2025 NFL draft, but he only entered the transfer portal on Wednesday. He is the best available offensive lineman on the portal, according to the On3 Industry Transfer Portal Ranking.
The 6-foot-5, 340-pound offensive tackle has only allowed nine sacks in 1,396 pass-blocking snaps. In 2024, he allowed only two sacks in 408 pass-blocking situations and was the league’s fourth-best run blocker, according to PFF.
On Thursday, King told On3 that he had no additional booked trips. Former New England Patriots head coach and potential NFL Hall of Famer Bill Belichick accepted the North Carolina position in December, sending shockwaves through football.
Since taking over the Tar Heels program, Belichick has added 16 transfers. King would be the sixth offensive line addition, joining Holy Cross’ Christo Kelly, Alabama’s Miles McVay, Rice’s Chad Lindberg, and Prairie View A&M’s William Boone.
Belichick takes over a program that ended 6-7 in 2024, including a loss to UConn in the Fenway Bowl.
King is prepared to play for Belichick, but there are concerns about his contract and the potential appeal of the NFL.
It’s worth noting the details of his buyout and the fact that he has yet to sign a contract.
According to CBS Sports, Belichick has not yet signed his contract, raising the question of whether his $10 million buyout would be triggered. Despite the rumors, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reiterated his position.
Pelissero cited UNC general manager Michael Lombardi’s public pronouncements about Belichick’s future after signing a five-year contract, the first three of which are guaranteed. However, he also noted that Belichick has not addressed the loudness to this time, which contradicts one of his long-standing New England practices.
“I am acutely aware of what Michael Lombardi continues to write on every social media platform, stating that ‘The NFL is not an option. Bill does not want to play in the NFL. We laugh at the NFL. It’s a joke for us. “He only wants to attend the University of North Carolina,” Pelissero stated on The Rich Eisen Show. “I also know Bill Belichick, who had a rule with players and coaches for years: you were only meant to speak about yourself. We haven’t heard directly from Bill Belichick on any of these topics.
“The realities right now are that he has received calls from teams, including one from Tom Brady. He has not signed a contract, which I know is not unusual at North Carolina. But when I mentioned a couple of weeks ago whether Bill Belichick or a new team would have to pay the $10 million buyout, I was referring to the fact that no memorandum of understanding or contract has been signed by all parties involved. So, there’s a little bit of ambiguity in terms of how exactly that would
