On Monday, organisers, the Edinburgh City Council, and Police Scotland all announced that several Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, such as the street party and fireworks at the castle, would not be happening.
Organisers have taken the “difficult decision” to postpone or cancel all outdoor events scheduled for December 30 and 31 due to concerns about participant safety in light of the harsh weather predictions.
Nevertheless, there are still a lot of activities that are scheduled to take place. Both Monday night’s Swamplesque show at Assembly Hall and Idlewild’s show at the Assembly Rooms are still on the books.
The Candlelit Concert at St. Giles’ Cathedral and the Bairns New Year Revels at the Assembly Rooms are still planned to go place on Tuesday.
“We also continue to look forward to the packed First Footin’ and Sprogmanay programme of events on New Year’s Day – a series of free and ticketed indoor music gigs across the city centre, Leith and Portobello,” said a representative from Edinburgh’s Hogmanay.
Events cancelled over the next two days include the Night Afore Disco Party in West Princes Street Gardens on Monday evening, the Hogmanay Street Party, Concert in the Gardens, and the Midnight Fireworks from Edinburgh Castle, on Tuesday.
The announcement of the events being cancelled follows a succession of weather warnings that have been issued across Scotland.
A yellow warning for wind throughout the central belt and other areas of Scotland is in place from Monday until 11pm on Hogmanay, while snow and rain alerts will stay in place from Monday until the bells.
On Sunday Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Torchlight Procession was also postponed at the last minute after organisers stated severe winds posed a risk to safety.
