So I asked them on Wednesday why Mahomes is the best. I figured those two should know. This is what they stated.
ME: The data show that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is experiencing a subpar season by his standards.
What do you perceive from him in particular? SHANAHAN: “I believe everyone says down year because their numbers aren’t insane, but Pat is as excellent as it gets. He has been as excellent as it gets since his first year of playing.
Except for one, I believe all of their games have come down to the final possession, and he is as excellent as anyone on that final possession.
Their running totals aren’t as high as they were last year. Their red zone isn’t particularly high.
So I believe that corresponds to numbers, but Pat is Pat and he’s as good as it gets, and I don’t see that changing at all.”
ME: What distinguishes Patrick Mahomes as the top quarterback in the league?
BOSA: “His arm strength.” He can get the ball vast distances very quickly, so you don’t need much separation. Then, when he develops plays, he likes to pump fake players and make them miss, allowing him to run for first downs when necessary.
His running skill is underappreciated. He’s strong, so he’s difficult to take down, and he makes sound decisions.” MY PERSPECTIVE ON THEIR OPINIONS: It’s intriguing that Shanahan brought up Mahomes’ brilliance at the end of close games.
Shanahan recently faced criticism for winning only 37.8 percent of one-score games as a head coach. I believe he would blame his quarterbacks for that number.
Furthermore, it’s intriguing that the first thing Bosa liked about Mahomes was his Brock Purdy lacks arm strength.
