Lewis Hamilton’s family life with two mothers, firing his own father, and growing up in’slums’

Lewis Hamilton is unquestionably one of Britain’s greatest athletic exports, with the 38-year-old largely regarded as the best Formula One driver to have ever lived.

Having two mothers Carmen Larbalestier, Hamilton’s biological mother, was born in 1955 and gave birth to him thirty years later. She has been observed at various Grand Prix weekends to encourage her son, and she accompanied him to Windsor Castle when he was knighted in late 2021.

Carmen reared the Mercedes driver with his half-sisters Nicola and Samantha after obtaining custody of him when he was 12 years old.

He announced last year that he was in the process of changing his name to incorporate his mother’s surname, saying: “I don’t entirely get the concept that when people marry, the lady loses her name. I truly want my mother to go on with the Hamilton name.

The British also have Linda, Hamilton’s stepmother, helped raise him after he moved in with her and his father at the age of 12.

She has also been observed in the paddock, when she famously hugged him together with Carmen after winning the Chinese Grand Prix in 2008, just weeks before capturing his first world title.

Hamilton’s father, Anthony, was a vital factor in his early career, juggling four jobs to finance karting fees. He went on to coach his son after he made it to F1 and oversaw his maiden world championship in 2008, but all changed when they split up two years later.

It came as a surprise when Hamilton announced that his father would no longer be involved in the management of his racing career. The divorce caused a lull in their personal relationship, but they have since reconciled and have been frequently photographed together at recent Grand Prix weekends.

Hamilton later addressed openly about his decision to separate from his father, told the On Purpose podcast: “Me and my father bumped heads at one point.” I truly only wanted him to be my father.

Let’s go have fun and laugh. We hadn’t had that in a very long time. I decided to part ways with my father in order to make my own decisions. There was a period when we talked less.”
