On Monday, ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan stated that the Toronto Blue Jays’ offseason has been a “unmitigated disaster.”
Later on Monday, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi stated that he still expects the Jays will make at least one substantial deal before pitchers and catchers report in mid-February.
“I do think that for the Blue Jays… they will find a way to add one more significant piece at the very least between now and when pitchers and catchers report…”
@JonMorosi discusses the free agency pitching market.
Thus far, Passan is correct about the Jays’ offseason. It’s been hampered by swings and misses from Juan Soto, Max Fried, Corbin Burnes, and Teoscar Hernandez. However, things can change, as Morosi points out. He connects the Jays with free agency slugger Anthony Santander and former Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta.
Santander has been linked to Toronto for some time, and numerous insiders believe they are the favorite.
The 30-year-old Santander is a Venezuelan native who just finished a great season for Baltimore, hitting.235 with 44 home runs and 102 RBIs. A lifetime. As a 246 hitter, he helped Baltimore reach the playoffs in two consecutive seasons (2023 and 2024).
Santander has hit at least 28 home runs in each of the last three seasons, and he has also driven in at least 89 runs.
Pivetta is a 31-year-old native Canadian. Last year, he went 6-12 for Boston with a 4.14 ERA and 172 strikeouts in 145.2 innings. Unfortunately for interested teams, he comes with a qualifying offer, which means the Jays would have to give up a draft pick.
