This has been the greatest story in South African football this week. Masebe Qina, Soccer Laduma’s prominent journalist, said that the Spanish giants are tracking the Orlando Pirates winger with the intention of signing him for the B squad at La Masia.Makhanya, Mofokeng’s previous reserve team coach, has said that the child is ready to pursue his ambition of playing in Europe.
“What I can say is that there has never been a period to determine whether or not someone is prepared to go to Europe. “It has to happen so we can see if they are ready,” Makhanya told FARPost.
“But I believe the team will make the appropriate decision for them because that is what we hope to see from them as development coaches.
“We want to see him [Mofokeng] thrive and realise his ambition of playing overseas, which we did not achieve while playing, to play in Europe. Now I’d like to see a player I’ve trained play for a great team like Barcelona, or perhaps Rangers in Scotland, as reports suggest,” the former Orlando Pirates winger added.
“But it must make commercial sense for the Pirates team as well. The move must ensure that the player makes progress, and as the player progresses, the nation benefits.
“We’ve seen Benni McCarthy succeed at the top level, which is what we desire for our players. I believe that if there is a possibility to make a move at an early stage, why not? We want to see the guys play internationally so they can compete with the finest in the world,” said the Orlando Pirates DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) coach.
