Perhaps Gunner Stockton, Georgia’s backup quarterback, should take the blame, despite passing for 234 yards and a touchdown in the Allstate Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame. Some may blame head coach Kirby Smart for failing to prepare his team and underperforming on the season’s biggest stage.
However, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum blamed Georgia football offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.
“They will blame Mike Bobo, the offensive coordinator. He came in and took over for (former Georgia offensive coordinator) [Todd] Monken, who left for the NFL, and, quite simply, nobody is thrilled with him.”
The Bulldogs outgained the Fighting Irish 296-244 in the game, but Georgia’s rushing attack only managed 62 yards on 29 carries, for a 2.1 yards per carry average.
Georgia went 2-for-12 on third down and 0-3 on fourth down conversions.
According to the Associated Press, Smart believes the Bulldogs’ two turnovers and poor special teams play were to blame for the loss.
Georgia Offensive Coordinator Mike Bobo

Georgia OC Mike Bobo speaks with Carson Beck.
“The turnovers are the difference in the game, guys,” Smart told the crowd. “I mean, you should know when you turn it over twice and they return a kickoff for a touchdown, you’re not going to have a lot of success.”
Bobo was Georgia’s quarterback from 1993 to 1997 and housemates with Smart. In 2005, the two also coached under former head coach Mike Richt. Bobo has been with the program since 2022, after working as Georgia’s quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator from 2001 to 2014. The 50-year-old was also the head coach of the Colorado State Rams between 2015 and 2019.
