For the most of the 2024 NFL season, the Detroit Lions dominated the headlines.
Dan Campbell’s team boasted a high-scoring offense and star players who enthralled television audiences.
In reality, the Lions were the most popular NFL team during the 2024 regular season.
According to Sportico, “You heard it first: The Lions, a symbol of futility and the inherent unfairness of it all for more years than most of us have been alive, finished the regular season as the most-watched NFL franchise. Over the course of ten wild and woolly national television dates, Campbell’s charges scared up 22.6 million viewers per game, edging the perennial ratings champs in Dallas by about 175,000 impressions.”
Despite winning games by a greater margin, fans tuned in to watch Detroit’s offense dominate and the defense show off their confidence with gritty, physical play.
Historically, networks were unwilling to feature the Lions in primetime due to their poor record and lack of star power.
Since general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell turned around the Lions’ fortunes, greater appearances in primetime games have paid well for everyone involved.
Campbell’s NFC North division champions will face the Commanders on Saturday evening at Ford Field.
