Rasmus Hojlund has become Ruben Amorim’s first-choice striker at Manchester United but there is no denying that the 21-year-old is still raw.
Behind him, Joshua Zirkzee has struggled to settle in and has been heavily linked with a move back to Italy this month. Marcus Rashford’s absence has left Amorim with very few other options to lead the line.
Therefore it makes sense that United are taking a good look at strikers available to sign this month. The latest reports suggest United are interested in Dusan Vlahovic with a potential swap deal being considered.
United could also swap Rashford for Victor Osimhen with Napoli looking to offload him in 2025. But one target that Amorim will be desperate to reunite with is Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres.
Man United interest in Viktor Gyokeres
After arriving at Carrington, Amorim promised not to sign Sporting players in January out of respect for his former club.
However, following a poor run of results in his first few months at Old Trafford, he may be regretting those comments now. United could make a January move for Gyokeres after all.
Gyokeres’ goal record under Amorim is nothing short of astonishing – the Swedish striker scored 66 goals in 68 games under him at Sporting. A reunion in Manchester would be fantastic news.
United fans raved about Gyokeres’ hat-trick against Manchester City back in November, and Gyokeres reminded Jason Wilcox of his talent by starting 2025 with another hat-trick against Vitoria.
The Red Devils look more likely to make a move for Gyokeres in the summer to honour Amorim’s promise, but there will be plenty of nerves about another top European club beating them to his signature.
Viktor Gyokeres stance on leaving Sporting in January
A report from the Daily Star this week suggested Bayern Munich could swoop for Gyokeres this month to brutally end United’s transfer hopes.
However, Sky Sports are now reporting that Gyokeres does not plan to leave Sporting in January as he has told his management that he is preparing for a big summer move.
Reports this season have suggested Gyokeres is valued at £63m by Sporting, but it is now claimed he could be sold for as little as £50m.
Even with United’s PSR troubles, that is a price that Amorim and Co. will be eager to pounce on.
