Nicky Byrne has taken to Instagram to share a hilarious throwback video of his audition tape for The Den.
While Nicky is most known for his work as part of Louis Walsh’s boyband Westlife, the singer has always been looking to explore a career as a TV presenter.
Prior to soaring to superstardom with his boyband, Nicky tied his chances at landing a spot on RTÉ’s beloved TV show The Den in 1998.
Sharing a video from The Den’s 2020 reboot, presenter Ray D’Arcy introduces Nicky’s audition tape that was found from ‘going through the archives’.
‘We were going through the archives during the week, we spotted something,’ Ray said.
Dustin the Turkey replied: ‘”Are you sure? Cause I thought it was one of the singers in the band?’
The video begins with Nicky sitting behind the show’s desk which has been hosted the likes of Ray and Ian Dempsey. However, the puppet turkey was quick to throw a jab at him.
‘Does your sister mind you wearing her necklace,’ Dustin asked.
A young Nicky bit back: ‘She doesn’t mind it all no. My mammy actually bought me this. She won’t be impressed Dustin.’
Captioning the post on his Instagram account, Nicky wrote: ‘Thanks to @team.westlife.world for this throwback. 26 years ago and Dustin the turkey hasn’t changed.’
Nicky’s fans were delighted recently to see that the singer would be returning to presenting through his podcast, having previously hosted a show on 2FM from 2014 to 2019, leaving the station to prepare for Westlife’s tour.
He also hosted Dancing with the Stars alongside Amanda Byram and then Jennifer Zamparelli, leaving the show in 2022 to focus more on Westlife commitments.
Outside of his time on DWTS, Nicky has presented a number of TV and radio shows over the years. After hosting the Cheerios ChildLine Concert seven times, Nicky first took to screens with RTÉ’s Football’s Next Star in 2012.
After presenting the series which saw a number of youngsters attempting to win a place with Celtic’s youth squad, Nicky hosted the short-lived talent show The Hit with Aidan Power in 2013.
Nicky suffered further frustration in 2015, when his National Lottery game show The Million Euro Challenge was axed by RTÉ after just six months. However, two years later he found success on DWTS.
Prior to leaving his main TV gig, Nicky presented Last Singer Standing, an RTÉ competition that featured Girls Aloud singer, Nadine Coyle, N*SYNC member, Joey Fatone and singer-songwriter, Samantha Mumba on its panel.
