Angel Reese loses $100,000 bet to Shaquille O’Neal: ‘I guess I owe him’

Angel Reese is enjoying her free time after finishing her WNBA rookie season, but she probably didn’t expect to lose $100,000 to Shaquille O’Neal as part of her extracurricular activities.

During a recent meeting with O’Neal, Reese, 22, challenged the 52-year-old NBA veteran to shoot from the free throw line for $100,000 — and the former Orlando Magic star made it look easy.

In a video posted to her Instagram Stories, Reese tells O’Neal, “$100,000 if you make this shot.” Without saying a word, O’Neal made the shot, and Reese shouted in joy. She captioned the video with, “I guess I owe him 100K 😭.”

Reese and O’Neal have formed a mentoring and friendship during her days as a standout at Louisiana State University. The four-time NBA champion (and fellow LSU grad) has stated, “She’s probably the greatest athlete to ever come out of LSU sports.” You’ve heard it here first. “Male or female?”

After being chosen into the WNBA in April, O’Neal gave his advice for Reese throughout her first season in the league. “I am described as Angel’s understandable ear,” O’Neal told PEOPLE exclusively about Reese.

“I know things that she went through, I know what she’s going through, I know what’s about to happen to her and I could give her advice.”

The basketball star, who was the first selection in the 1992 NBA Draft and went on to play for six different NBA teams throughout a 19-year career, said the youngster may take comfort in his advise because of his league experience.

O’Neal stated that while others “speak about greatness,” he has “seen it” and “heard it.” So he answered, “You can take my word for it.”
