Peavy Sounds the Alarm: Yankees’ Biggest Postseason Worry!!!

There are still some questions about the New York Yankees. Although the Yankees won their division and advanced to the 2024 MLB Playoffs, their pitching rotation remains a source of concern. On the Baseball Tonight podcast, former Cy Young winner Jake Peavy expressed his doubts about the Yankees.

“I have questions about the starters,” Peavy said. “Who is Gerrit Cole during the postseason? Does Rodon show up and earn that deal, as we have seen at times? If they do and carry a good load for the six or seven innings that you need those top-tier guys to go, it relieves burden on the rest of the series.”

Cole threw a vintage game for the Yankees last week, but there is still cause for concern. Despite New York’s MVP frontrunner, Aaron Judge, one player cannot carry an entire team in the playoffs. The pitching has raised several red flags. The team’s ERA is 3.69, which ranks sixth in the MLB. Regardless, the injuries have forced Yankees manager Aaron Boone to unleash his arsenal of techniques.

The Yankees have a strong rotation. Carlos Rodón has led the way with a 16-9 record. He also has a 3.98 ERA, with 190 strikeouts and 53 walks. Luis Gil is just behind him, with a 15-6 record. He has a 3.27 ERA, with 166 strikeouts and 76 walks. With Cole back in the mix, it’s unclear who will be the top option.

Additionally, relief pitcher Luke Weaver has demonstrated tremendous flare. Weaver can fire a laser with his fastball, shift the pace with his changeup, and demolish batters with his cut fastball. As the Yankees approach the postseason, Peavy is convinced that their pitching will do the job.

“I’m excited about the Yankees team, I think they have their most complete team in a while,” Peavy told the press. “I believe that when compared to the rest of the league, they appear to have the potential to succeed. This bullpen will reveal what Weaver is. Luke Weaver is an electric, emotive, and three-pitch mix person. Tommy Kahnle has been excellent, and Clay Holmes can certainly get the job done. Ian Hamilton, Cousins, and Leiter Jr. have the depth and names to pull this off, especially given the lineup.

New York wraps off its series with the Baltimore Orioles before facing the Pittsburgh Pirates in the season finale. It would be interesting to see some experimentation with pitching lineups before the playoffs began.
